October 20th, 2011 Update: The Professional Development Committee is pleased to announce that a number of successful grant proposals (including many listed under Other Funding Opportunities) can now be checked out from the Office of Instruction and Graduate Studies (Bray 2nd Floor). These proposals are a great opportunity to see the kinds of work being funded here at ESF.

About Our Work

The Professional Development Committee was initiated to identify the needs of ESF graduate students and fill in the gaps of what is offered on campus in terms of professional development through hosting panels, workshops, and the co-hosting the Spotlight on Student Research.

To help you navigate this process, we invite you to join us for a

We'll go over the details of the timeline of requirements for completing your degree
with Scott Shannon and Suzette Vandeburg of the Office of Instruction and Graduate Studies
and open it up for any questions you may have.
Light refreshments will be served, but feel free to bring your lunch!

2011 - 2012 Grant Writing Workshops

The Professional Development Committee will sponsor two grant workshops this year, one each in the fall and spring. The fall grants workshop was held October 13 in 105 Marshall and featured an all-star cast of graduate students and faculty, including David Kieber, Colin Beier, Michael Amadori, Bruno Takahashi, Giorgos Mountrakis, Mark Teece, and Art Stipanovic. Many thanks to all of them! We also initiated a sign up sheet for students interested in creating a group for review and edit of fellow student grant writing work. E-mail Jesse Robinson if you are interested in joining that list. The Sample Grant Writing Timeline from our event is included below.

PS  If your deadlines for applying for faculty jobs are very soon and you’d like some tips or a review of your materials, you can set up an individual meeting with me in September by calling 443.3616. The receptionist has my schedule.

PPS We held our first meeting of  first generation PhD students during the summer and began a very good conversation. We will be holding the second conversation over lunch later in September.  If you are a doc student or post doc from a non-college educated family, and are interested in joining the conversation, please send me a direct email. We will meet in September around the schedules of those who respond.
