Diversity and Inclusion from the Ground Up: Debriefing
Dear ESF Community,
Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the event on Wednesday, December 2, 2015, Diversity and Inclusion from the Ground Up. We wanted to briefly follow up by summarizing some of the information that was generated for those who were unable to stay past College Hour as well as anyone who was not able to attend.
A very concise description of the five topic areas is included below, and a PDF containing the full expansive set of each "topic’s board" information is attached. These topics were intended to help organize thoughts and generate ideas about how diversity and inclusion initiatives can be incorporated within these areas.
(Topic area: Example from the discussion)
Academics: Highlighting existing and developing novel coursework where diversity is explored and emphasized in different contexts, while engaging in thoughtful and respectful discussions surrounding diversity within all coursework.
Community: Connecting to local communities in Syracuse and Central New York to diversify our outreach and improve inclusiveness with our neighbors.
Infrastructure: Improving and developing physical, digital, and organizational systems on campus in order to achieve comprehensive accessibility, inclusivity, and unity for all members of the ESF Community.
Programming: Creating new opportunities to explore and experience diversity through various routine programming, both formally and informally.
Training: Providing training opportunities for multiple diversity and inclusion topics in a variety of different formats and engagement levels.
A major theme of all conversations, both plenary and in the discussion groups, was communication. Effective and respectful communication about topics of diversity and inclusion is critical to moving forward in a positive way. The USA and GSA are committed to making these initiatives a priority now and into the future, and we are confident that faculty, staff, and administration are too. Please keep an eye out for many future opportunities to engage in similar dialogues in the spring and beyond through both events and online forums to continue these conversations forward.
Thank you again to everyone who was able to participate in Wednesday's event and to everyone who has helped us along the way.
Have a wonderful finals week and holiday,
USA and GSA
